By carving a pumpkin at Halloween this year you will be carrying on an ancient tradition. This tradition dates back to the UK and Ireland in the early 1800s when vegetables were turned into lanterns at harvest time.
Traditionally the pumpkin's top is cut off, the flesh and seeds are scooped out of the inside and an image, usually of a face, is carved onto the outside. The lid is then replaced and when the sun sets a small candle is placed inside to make the carved features glow.
Remember that the black is what you cut out and the white represents the pumpkin.
